Bigger, Better Library for East County

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The construction of a new library for the community of Alpine is another step closer to reality.

The County Board of Supervisors gave the go-ahead to advertise for a design and build contract during a Board meeting Tuesday.

The new library will be more than four times the size of the current facility and feature separate areas for children, tweens and teenagers. The approximate 13,500 square foot facility will also include study rooms, computer stations, a family homework center, an outdoor patio overlooking the nearby park and a reading area complete with a fireplace. All this would be built to Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) Silver Certification which means the facility would meet high standards for energy efficiency. Currently, the County leases the site of the existing library branch. It measures 3,018 square feet and has been in use since 1978.

The County already bought the land for the new building located next to the Alpine Community Center and the Veterans Wall of Honor. The County Library and residents have also come up with ideas of the features they would like to see in the $10 million project. The actual design – architecture and floor plan – to express those characteristics will be prepared by the winning design-build team.

If all goes according to plan, construction could get underway within nine months and the facility would be ready for a grand opening by the end of 2015.
