Catch Moon, Stars, Even Meteor Shower at County Parks!

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Break away from the busy demands of the holiday season, grab the kids and go sky gazing at two County parks.

Oakoasis Preserve in Lakeside is hosting a free star party on Saturday, Dec. 12. Bundle up and bring your telescopes or use the high-powered telescopes on hand for the event. Cozy up to a campfire for warmth; sing some songs and roast some marshmallows. There will be a night hike and even a bat quest with a park ranger! The fun begins at 5 p.m. and lasts until 8 p.m. You might even catch some shooting stars!

You can also make a night of it and camp out at the park. Check-in is at 2 p.m. and checkout is the next day at noon. Campsites are $24 each and spots are limited so you’ll need to reserve a site at sdparks.org.

Stop by Oakoasis for another starry, starry night on Sunday, Dec. 13. The Geminids meteor shower should be at its peak, and sky watchers plan to gather at 8 p.m. and count shooting stars until midnight. Be sure to dress warmly and bring a folding chair, blanket and/or sleeping bag. It’s going to be chilly! This event is free and open to all ages.

Eating too much during the holidays? Battle the bulge with another nighttime event, a moonrise hike on Saturday, Dec. 26. Make it a family affair and bring everyone with you! The hike begins at 6 p.m. at Stelzer Park in Lakeside. A park ranger will lead the intermediate level hike to the lookout where everyone can watch the moon rise high above the mountains. The ranger can share information on the stars and some of the nocturnal critters at the park. Be sure to wear sturdy shoes, dress for the weather, bring water and a flashlight. This event is free but there is a $3 parking fee.

Bad weather will cancel the star events. For more information, call County Parks at (619) 561-0580.
