The County and the City of San Diego not only share a name, but also a common goal to improve the health and safety of residents.

On Tuesday, the San Diego City Council unanimously endorsed partnering with the County on Live Well San Diego, the ongoing initiative launched in 2010 that focuses on a promoting healthy lifestyles and safer communities.

“The County implemented the Live Well San Diego initiative to help create healthy, thriving communities but we knew we couldn’t do it alone,” said Board of Supervisors Chairman Greg Cox. “That’s why getting cities, school districts and businesses to sign up as Live Well supporters is so important. They can help spread the message throughout neighborhoods and communities.”

The partnership will build on a number of programs and projects the city has launched that align with Live Well San Diego. That includes promoting walking, bicycling, and using public transportation through community events and infrastructure planning.

“I am very pleased to see the City of San Diego embracing this initiative and also adopting the strategies that we believe are critical to success,” said Supervisor Ron Roberts, whose district covers about half of the city. “In very powerful ways the city can help us make positive choices for healthy lives and also bring about policy and environmental changes that will make it easier for citizens to ‘live well.’  Together we can make a very big difference.”

The partnership will also look for ways to enhance coordination between the County and City in emergency response and creating smoke-free environments. The City of San Diego is home to 1.3 million residents – more than a third of the population of San Diego County.

“I think taxpayers want to see the City and the County working closely together,” said interim San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria. “What we are saying in passing this resolution is that we all want to live in a healthy community.”
