County Renews Prescription Drug Discount Program

The San Diego County Board of Supervisors approved an extension of the prescription drug discount program that saved county residents nearly $5 million since it was begun 14 months ago.

The Coast2Coast Rx card was launched in June, 2011, and provides discounts on name-brand and generic prescriptions as well as dental, vision, hearing, lab and imaging services, diabetic equipment and supplies and even veterinary services.

“The response to this program has been tremendous,” said Chairman Ron Roberts, Board of Supervisors. “We knew in these challenging economic times that our partnership with Coast2Coast would be important to the community.”

Roberts said that nearly 22,000 residents had used the card to fill over 143,000 prescriptions. Anyone living in San Diego County is eligible to participate regardless of age, income, health or insurance status. There are no membership requirements or enrollment paperwork.

Card holders have access to discounted rates on more than 60,000 medications. The minimum savings is 10 percent on every prescription filled and in some cases the discount can be up to 75 percent. The nationwide average savings in 2011 was 55 percent.

“This program has saved county residents money during these difficult economic times,” said Supervisor Greg Cox. “We want more people to have access to the card so I urge San Diegans to call 2-1-1 to find out more information about the program.”

To start saving immediately, residents can download and print their free card at www.coast2coastrx.com/sd. It will be valid for use by all family members immediately, with no expiration date.
