Today the County Board of Supervisors approved a comprehensive report highlighting the progress made during the first year of Live Well, San Diego!, the County of San Diego’s 10-year plan to build a healthy, safe and thriving community throughout the San Diego region.

“The inaugural year of Live Well, San Diego! has been innovative and productive,” said Bill Horn, Chairman of the County Board of Supervisors. “The collaboration between our County team and our community partners is paying off. San Diego is already making healthier choices.”

The Live Well, San Diego! report highlights how the County is working in the community to prevent chronic disease and childhood obesity.

The Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA) has been working with community partners to improve residents’ access to healthy foods and disease-preventing immunizations. County libraries have hosted health and fitness programs for over 28,500 residents of all ages. The Department of Parks and Recreation offers expanded opportunities for physical activity by providing 107 health related events and classes throughout the San Diego region.

Live Well, San Diego! is a ‘call to action’ on the local level,” said Walt Ekard, County of San Diego, Chief Administrative Officer. “All of our County departments overwhelmingly accepted the challenge, and they have championed a number of their own innovative efforts aimed at community health and wellness.”

The County will continue to partner with residents, public and private partners, government agencies, and neighborhood-based organizations to optimize existing resources and improve the health and well-being of San Diego residents.

“Live Well, San Diego! has become a wide‐ranging initiative that touches everyone in our community. The County has worked with schools, community based organizations, public and private partners, and city and government agencies to make this initiative a success,” said Nick Macchione, HHSA Director.
