No Change in Condition of Dog Found with Gunshot Wound

Reading Time: < 1 minute

County Animal Services is looking for witnesses or information in connection with a dog found with a gunshot wound near the Viejas Casino Monday.

On Tuesday, the 40-pound retriever mix continued to be treated with fluids, antibiotics, pain medication, and oxygen at the Mission Valley Emergency Medical Animal Hospital. He was in stable but critical condition, and Animal Services medical staff said it was too early to tell whether the dog would survive or what treatment he would need.

Animal Services is looking for the dog’s owner and anyone who knows anything about the shooting’s circumstances.

The conscious and wounded animal was found about 7:30 a.m. Monday near the Heartland fire station on Viejas Grade Road. He had been shot through the torso.

It is unclear where the shooting occurred, but an animal control officer’s preliminary investigation indicates it happened close to where the animal was found.

The animal had no collar, ID or microchip and is known to run loose near the Viejas Casino and the fire station.

Anyone with information about who owns the dog or what happened is encouraged to call County Animal Services at 619-236-2341.

Updates on the dog’s condition will be posted on Animal Services Facebook page.

Anyone who wishes to donate to the dog’s veterinary care can visit the department’s website or visit one of the County’s three shelters.
