Start the year off safe, healthy – and minus any difficult legal trouble.
“We want to send a message to the public this New Year’s weekend to drive sober or get pulled over. This is the time of the year to spend time with family and friends and not in jail or in a hospital bed,” said Lt. Jose Sanchez of the Sheriff’s Department Traffic Services Division.
The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department and local police with assistance from the County Probation Department will be conducting several DUI/Driver License Checkpoints and extra patrol operations throughout the region this holiday weekend.
DUI checkpoints and roving DUI patrols are a proven tool that reduces the number of people killed or injured in alcohol-related crashes. Deputies and officers from the San Diego County Avoid the 14 Task Force will be at checkpoints looking for signs of alcohol and/or drug impairment and proper licensing.
The following communities will have special enforcement operations to deter drunk driving:
- In Sabre Springs, a checkpoint will start about 7 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 30 and continue until about 2 a.m. Saturday.
- In addition to roving patrols Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights, Escondido police will hold a sobriety and driver’s license checkpoint Friday, Dec. 30.
- On New Year’s Eve, extra deputies and officers from the Avoid task force will saturate various areas in Pacific Beach to spot intoxicated drivers.
- A sobriety checkpoint will also be held from 10 p.m. to 3 a.m. downtown San Diego on New Year’s Eve.
Impaired drivers can expect jail, license suspension, and insurance increases, as well as fines, fees, and DUI classes that can exceed $10,000 in costs.
