Where Free Advice is Really Free

Perhaps you’ve seen the public service announcements (PSAs) from the federal government where a guy buying a cell phone peppers the salesman with more than a dozen questions – some as specific as the measurements for the headset jack. Then it shows the same guy in a doctor’s office and when he’s asked if he has any questions, he says no.The point of the PSA is to encourage people to ask questions of their doctors. The same holds true for pharmacists. A pharmacist is someone adults – especially seniors – probably see regularly, but don’t talk to very often.

The Health and Human Services Agency’s (HHSA) Aging & Independence Services and several community partners hope to change that by hosting two Meet the Pharmacist events where local pharmacists will be available for free, private consultations.

The first one is on Thursday, May 24, at the George L. Stevens Senior Center, 570 South 65th Street, San Diego. Another event will be held on Tuesday, May 29, at the Kimball Senior Center, 1221 D Avenue, National City. Both are from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and you can RSVP at 877-926-8300.

Older adults are encouraged to bring their medications, including supplements and vitamins, to make sure they aren’t adversely affected by certain foods or other medications. Pharmacists can also find alternatives for folks having trouble swallowing pills. There will also be speakers, exhibits, health screenings, and educational information.

Making sure our seniors have the information and knowledge to remain safe and healthy is a key component of the County’s Live Well, SanDiego! 10-year countywide initiative to build better health in the region.
