Crime Mapping Tool Goes Countywide

Reading Time: < 1 minute

If you’re concerned about crime in your neighborhood, access to a free online tool is now available anywhere in the county.

Crimemapping.com was previously limited to the Sheriff’s Department’s jurisdiction, but now it’s been expanded to all the cities within the county as well.

The rollout comes during October, which is Crime Prevention Awareness Month.  The Sheriff’s Department says that having an awareness of crime helps residents take informed steps to make their neighborhoods less vulnerable to crime.

The Sheriff’s Department is partnering with ARJIS (Automated Regional Justice Information System), SANDAG (San Diego Association of Governments), and law enforcement agencies across the county to provide the service free to the public.

Crimemapping.com analyzes and maps crime data from arson to assault, burglary, drugs/alcohol
violations, DUI, fraud, homicide, car theft, robbery, sex crimes, vandalism, car break‐ins, weapons violations, and even multiple crimes at a single location.

Icons provide detailed information about these crimes.  You can view maps in either a satellite photo view or on a road map. Crimes can be compiled in a report format or shown as a graph to identify patterns or trends. There is also an option to sign up for email alerts and email the link to others which would be useful for Neighborhood Watch Groups.  The site also has crime prevention tips.

The Sheriff’s Department has a video that explains more about the tool.
